LEFT

When you are able to, which of course is something not all of us are, but when you have privilege, wealth, security, safety, mental health - Isn’t it then your duty to use those things to try and help others who don’t have those things?

Shouldn’t we all care about the wellbeing of all humans? If you’re aware of the suffering of other humans and you’re aware of the injustices faced by people everywhere in the world, both close to you and far away, isn’t it your moral duty to do something about it?

Shouldn’t you care about how millions of people in the world are starving everyday, don’t have clean running water, don’t have shelter? Shouldn’t you care that children are dying of completely preventable diseases every minute of every day? The most basic human needs that you take for granted: Some people don’t have those. Doesn’t that bother you?

And doesn’t it bother you that some people live in countries where almost every day there is bombing, devastating violence, war, famine and all the horrible conditions that that violence leaves in its wake? The trauma, the post-traumatic stress, the mental health devastation.

And what about other forms of injustice that you don’t face, but you’re aware of? Genital mutilation? Rape? Torture?

And the things you have a more direct connection to: The child labour, the exploited workers who pick coffee beans, farm rice, fruit and veg, so you can have inexpensive groceries, competitively priced, that you can toss out if they go bad, while people far away can barely feed themselves or their families, working long hours in factories, building the technology that you use to listen to this. The way you support this system without having to think about it, without having to pay attention to the real cost. What about the meat industry? Millions and millions of animals slaughtered and the land decimated so that we can continue to eat cheap, fast food. The effect it has on the climate. The rapidly dwindling resources of the planet.

If you care about the world you live in, or the people you share this planet with, you should care about these things and you should be actively trying to change them!

RIGHT

Why is it my responsibility to care? Who says that that’s part of the deal of being a human: that I have to give a fuck about anyone else? Where is this contract? Where are the terms and conditions? I didn’t sign up for this. I didn’t ask to be born into this unjust world. I haven’t held anyone at gunpoint and forced them to do anything against their will.

Why is it my fault that bad people are doing bad things in the world? Why is it my responsibility to stop them? Even if I wanted to, how could I? There are always going to be bad people, there always has been, there always will be. Is that my fault? Why should I have to do anything about that? In this life it’s every person for themselves. Survival of the fittest. It may seem unfair, but that’s how it is. That’s human nature. That’s the nature of the world. We have evolved from animals and we are animals too. It’s in our DNA to be selfish, so why fight it?

This bleeding heart attitude of saving everyone: It’s nonsense. You want to save everyone but you don’t want to give up what you have. Isn’t that it? There’s 7 billion people on this planet, you think there’s enough to go around for everyone? Wake up!

Now more than ever, we need to fight for what we have and we need to be ready to fight to keep it, because those people who don’t have it, want it and they’re going to come for it, eventually, mark my words. You think I’m just going to give away everything that I have? Everything that my ancestors fought for? Everything that I feel it is my birthright to have? No chance.

Even if we could make everything equal, do you think everyone will just agree to keep things that way? Do you think people will be happy to share everything equally, after they’ve been denied it for so long? Do you really think everyone will just agree to get along and be nice to each other forever? That wars won’t break out? That people won’t be greedy and corrupt and try to take more than they’re given, eventually? Humans are greedy, humans are selfish - that is our nature.

I don’t care about the world I live in, or the people I share this planet with, I shouldn’t have to care about these things and I don’t have to be actively trying to change them!
