about

A WEE BIT OF TEXT FOR CONTEXT:

This song came about because yesterday I was met with abuse from some Mike Patton die-hard fans, who jumped to defend a video, Patton and members of S.O.D uploaded, which is a cover of the quite clearly, racially problematic song, "Speak English Or Die" (the lyrics are appalling).

Patton, perhaps attempting to turn the original racist text in the song on its head, changes the chorus and title of the song to, "Speak Spanish Or Die", but as far as I'm concerned that doesn't excuse him singing the rest of the original, clearly racist, lyrics of the song.

Besides this, it would be very easy for someone to interpret "Speak Spanish Or Die" as a dig at Latin-American / Mexican / South American people living in the US, (we're all being forced to speak Spanish now).

I appreciate that it's possible Patton's intention was to challenge the original racism of the song, but if so he has completely mishandled this. If that was his intention, it's vague to say the least. And as far as I'm concerned, in this day and age, being vague about your stance on racism and racial inequality is just not fucking good enough!

So, I was quite disappointed when I saw the video (I've been a serious Patton fan boy for over 30 years) and I said as much, (perhaps rather foolishly) in a Mike Patton Facebook fan group that I was a member of (until last night). Well, of course the backlash was swift and uncompromising: I was told, Scott Ian who wrote the lyrics back in the 80s was being ironic, you see. So obviously all the non-white people at his gigs and in his band and supporting his music are in on the joke guys. So you see, it's ok, right? He's only joking about all those really racially insensitive things he's saying.

... I'm sorry, you're not getting away with that one, when clearly people from that band (namely the singer, Billy Milano) are still gun-totin' MAGA wank stains.

I was also accused of "virtue signalling" and I was accused of trying to be offended. Funny enough, the people throwing shit at me were all white American dudes! Awesome guys! 2020 and y'all don't know what racism is. Wonderful.

So, this is a song in response to all of that, e.g. Fuck Mike Patton's vague stance on racism and fuck those guys defending him.

Enjoy!

LYRICS:

I know why you don’t see
All the obvious things
Wrong with this situation

If you were me
You’d be looking at you
With the same pity too

White is your default position
And anything else
Is something not you

Why do I have to
Explain this to you in 2020?

You’re centre of the universe
And everything emanates from you
Like a really bad smell

I’d love to kick your fucking face in

And now you’re shouting
All the obvious things
Stupid cunts like you shout

Nothing in your worldview
Is gonna help you
To work it all out

You've never had to learn
What privilege means
How wonderful for you

White is your default perspective
And all of Hollywood
is made for you

And historical oppression is still institutionalised

I’m going to slowly dip you into a vat of boiling acid
How do you plan to call me, “a snowflake" with no fucking teeth?
